Innovation Zone requirements:

Your demonstration must reflect technology that is innovative, game changing and important to entertainment markets including production, post production, broadcast, distribution, OTTs or related areas. Experimental products and new concepts or products are of particular interest. Start ups or creative solutions are most welcome.

You may bring secondary partners to be part of your space and demonstration if it fits within a complete solution that can differentiate the workflow or delivery process from what is available today.

2021 HPA Tech Retreat Roundtables

Traditionally, the HPA Tech Retreat Breakfast Roundtables have been literal round tables at which participants eat breakfast and discuss issues. They have been one of the most popular parts of the retreat, even covered on local TV twice.

In 2021, the roundtables will be virtual and BYOB (bring your own breakfast — or lunch or supper or snack, depending on your time zone). Each will be limited to 12 participants at a time, including host/moderator. There will be five time slots:

  • Tuesday, March 16, 9-10 AM PST
  • Tuesday, March 16, noon-1 PM PST
  • Tuesday, March 23, 9-10 AM PST
  • Tuesday, March 23, 1-2 PM PST
  • Wednesday, March 24, 9-10 AM PST

As usual, anyone registered for the HPA Tech Retreat may host/moderate a roundtable in each time slot (until we reach capacity). Topics may be anything related to our industry. Topic titles should be on the brief side (e.g., “AI subtitling” instead of “Using artificial intelligence and machine learning to create subtitles for motion picture and television programming and direct streaming”). Roundtables will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. There is no deadline, but the capacity limit will not be exceeded. There is no vetting (there is also no speaker discount conveyed by moderating/hosting a roundtable). There is no cost beyond registration for the HPA Tech Retreat.

Hosts/moderators may preach, teach, sell, kvell, ask, take to task, referee fights, or do anything else that keeps the conversation flowing for an hour. As the word “sell” suggests, breakfast roundtables are the only part of the retreat where marketing is acceptable. If more than one slot is selected, the topics may be the same or different. Topics may be changed up to the last minute at the host/moderator’s sole discretion. Even host/moderator may be changed, but the person requesting the slot is responsible for it being covered for the full hour, even if no one else shows up and even if the host/moderator would rather sit in on someone else’s roundtable.
