HPA TR-X: Imagine No Limits

This year’s HPA Tech Retreat TR-X Monday session kicks off with the bold theme “Imagine No Limits”, a call to reimagine what’s possible in the world of Media & Entertainment. Our industry is evolving at breakneck speed, and while change can feel overwhelming, “Imagine No Limits” reminds us that it isn’t something to fear. The tools reshaping our workflows may seem daunting at first, but they’re opening doors to extraordinary opportunities and inspiring creators to reach new heights. Together, we’ll explore where the future of our industry is headed and how no idea is too ambitious when we dream up new workflows and build the technology to bring them to life. Hear from trailblazers and future-thinkers who are redefining the rules, while also reflecting on past “no limits” visions to see how far we’ve come. By the end of the day, you won’t just walk away with insights. You’ll carry fresh sparks of inspiration to fuel conversations and collaborations that flow into the evening’s networking.

SMPTE at Warp Speed? Actually, Yes!

With the increasing rate of change in our business, how can we possibly keep up, while doing the right thing collectively to ensure the level of interoperability that is demanded of us? Part of the answer is to work cooperatively in a “rising tide” spirit, but these days, that has to happen rapidly.

SMPTE has streamlined many of its processes and provided tools for us that are beginning to really bear fruit. Its Rapid Industry Solutions (RIS) organization has made meaningful impact. RIS-OSA has cranked out a collection of badly needed solutions that address interoperability among media services, key in today’s hybrid cloud world.

Key among those is its current work on the next big SMPTE standards suite – ST 2138 (Catena). Leveraging well-accepted and adopted industry standards such as Zero Trust, gRPC, REST, ProtoBuf and a host of others, Catena has been able to be developed quickly into the industry’s newest (and only) open-source standard for control of media devices and services. Using SMPTE’s Public Committee Draft (PCD) process to get documents and code out in front of implementers rapidly, alongside freely accessible Github repositories has been a boon to providing solutions quickly to the industry.

It will be a dive into what’s been going on in SMPTE and RIS, with a focus on Catena, along with a sneak peek at what’s planned for the remainder of 2026.

FAQ

1. What makes the HPA Tech Retreat unique?

The HPA Tech Retreat is different. It’s a real retreat.  We ask world-class leaders in engineering, technology, creativity, and business to turn away from their day-to-day routines and gather to explore and experience the most compelling topics around the creation, management, and dissemination of content. This kind of focused, authentic discussion between experts happens nowhere else.

Ideas are explored and debated – not just during onstage presentations, but throughout the event, from the golf tournament to Roundtables and dinners, all the way through to nightcaps.

Plus, the HPA Tech Retreat is taking over the hotel – so everyone you meet will be part of the conference, making networking easy.

And we are having a fun day on Sunday – golf, yoga and pickleball – so come early!

2. How do I submit a conference proposal?

The request for conference and Roundtable proposals opens August 1. It will remain open until the program is completed, or the Roundtables are filled. For more information on submitting, click here.

3. Who is Mark Schubin?

Multiple Emmy-award winning SMPTE Life Fellow Mark Schubin is the world’s greatest expert on the intersecting histories of media technology and opera. He helped create the hotel in-room movie business, the first live nationwide stereo simulcast network, the first live multi-language cinema subtitles, and what was probably the first HDR-to-SDR converter (though no one knew what HDR was at the time). He has worked on moving-image projects on all seven continents (including Antarctica), including news in Kazakhstan, cable TV in Hong Kong, and the television transmission system of Barbados. He also worked on the standardization of the VU meter. His bedroom was an official test site of the ATSC, his paper on aspect ratios was cited by the FCC, and his blog at SchubinCafe.com is archived by the Library of Congress.

4. What are Roundtables?

The Roundtables are topical discussions during the HPA Tech Retreat – one topic per table.

They are one of the most popular aspects of the retreat. Each table has a number which corresponds to a posted list of topics and moderators.

Once the maximum number of tables is reached, no more will be accepted. Note: No more than one Roundtable per organization per day; more only if tables aren’t all claimed on the day.

Moderators may choose any topic and run the Roundtables as they see fit. They may present information, gather information from those at the table, or simply moderate discussions among other attendees.

All Roundtable moderators must be registered for the HPA Tech Retreat and there is no registration discount conveyed by moderating a Roundtable.

Proposals should be submitted to proposals@hpaonline.com.

5. Health & Safety

HPA is committed to your health, safety, and comfort while attending the HPA Tech Retreat. Please read our Event Policy before registering, and do not hesitate to contact us at hpa@hpaonline.com with any questions or concerns.

In the event of any health concerns during the event, health and safety personnel will be available onsite. Please check-in with the Registration counter for assistance.

6. I want to attend, how do I convince my manager?

To convince your manager to send you to the 2026 HPA Tech Retreat, you will have to determine all the costs ahead of time.

The first thing to check is whether your employer is a member of HPA. If they are a corporate member or if you are an individual member, the conference prices are much lower.

If your company is a member, then you are too! All employees are included under a corporate membership, but you must sign up. Just create an account here, and make sure to use your corporate email. We will activate your membership.

You can find the hotel information and rates here. HPA provides most meals except dinner on Sunday and Monday evenings.

Here’s the approach that we suggest. Please modify the cost paragraph (highlighted below) to suit your circumstances.

We hope this helps and we hope to see you there!

The following companies have provided descriptions for the technology they will be bringing. More to come!

BirdDog

BirdDog Connect: Creativity First, Technology That Stays Out of the Way

BirdDog Connect is designed for a modern production world where new technologies—including AI—are changing how teams work, but creative decisions still belong firmly with people. Connect supports this shift by enabling smoother, flexible collaboration across Post, Live, and hybrid workflows, ensuring innovation enhances creativity rather than complicating it. It provides a clean, integrated pathway for emerging tools to slot naturally into existing pipelines without adding layers of infrastructure.

At the HPA Tech Retreat, BirdDog will demonstrate how Connect unlocks this simplicity through seamless media movement and real-time collaboration. Built to work directly inside tools like Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Media Composer, Connect delivers high-quality, low-latency 4K streaming and secure remote review without the need for specialised hardware or GPU-heavy cloud stacks.

The showcase will highlight multi-site editorial workflows, live contribution, advanced media distribution, and Connect’s Router module—all designed to reduce friction between teams and locations. By supporting NDI, SRT, NDI Bridge, WebRTC, and RTMP within one platform, Connect keeps workflows light, scalable, and intuitive.

BirdDog Connect brings powerful technology to creative teams in a way that feels invisible—letting people focus on the work, not the stack behind it.

Bitpress

Bitpress, a leader in automated post-production workflows, has launched SubPress, a new tool that intelligently synchronizes subtitles and closed captions with video masters.

SubPress automatically analyzes, detects, and corrects subtitle or caption timing issues—producing frame-accurate, streaming-ready outputs. It integrates seamlessly with the broader Bitpress suite of automation tools that convert raw media assets into distribution-ready masters with exceptional speed and precision.

Once a reference video is identified, SubPress evaluates every subtitle or caption event, adjusts synchronization as needed, and verifies those changes for accuracy. The system currently supports over 75 languages and all common subtitle and caption formats with automated input/output format matching.

Built to automate timed-text normalization and conformance, SubPress introduces new engine enhancements that deliver substantial gains in subtitle workflow efficiency. Users can define per-job settings—such as sync tolerance, sync-to-video timecode, or sync-to-reference-file preferences—when submitting files for automated correction.

High-throughput architecture allows processing of thousands of titles per day, automatically flagging only those that require manual review. This ensures operators spend time only on exceptions, not routine sync checks.

The user interface provides a unified view of all completed jobs for a given title or episode, allowing operators to preview source, output, and proxy files.

Castlabs

As content production and localisation pipelines become increasingly distributed, studios face unprecedented exposure to leaks across global workflows. STARDUSTmark v2, our studio-grade leak detection, addresses this challenge through next-generation, single-frame forensic watermarking designed for real-world, high-risk environments.

Powered by our new extraction engine, STARDUSTmark v2 achieves double the robustness of its predecessor under degraded conditions such as cropping, re-encoding, resizing, or extreme compression—maintaining accurate user identification even when content has been visually transformed beyond recognition.

Optimised for today’s end-to-end studio operations, our technology safeguards subtitled and dubbed masters, internal distribution copies, and pre-release assets across every stage of localisation, review, and delivery. Each frame carries a unique, imperceptible identifier that enables traceable leak detection from a single frame, even after complex workflow transformations.

The enhanced embedding pipeline preserves exceptional visual fidelity while enabling fast, scalable watermark application and extraction. Extensive performance tests across resolutions from CIF to 4K show substantial gains in detection accuracy and resilience compared to previous versions—remaining effective even when only 3% of the original image is available.

With STARDUSTmark v2, we redefine forensic watermarking reliability for global content workflows—empowering studios to maintain content security, accountability, and trust without disrupting creative or operational efficiency.

EIZO

ColorEdge
PROMINENCE CG1

EIZO will be showcasing the new PROMINENCE CG1 HDR reference Display. The CG1 is EIZO’s next generation PROMINENCE HDR monitor.

CG1 is a 30.5 inch DCI 4K (4096×2160) HDR reference display that qualifies as a Dolby Vision mastering monitor. Its dual-layer LCD panel produces 1000 cd/m2 full screen brightness while maintaining HDR black level with 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Like its predecessor CG3146, inputs include HDMI, DisplayPort and 3G/6G/12G SDI input and loop out. The CG1 is equipped with two 25GbE SFP28 connectors, supporting the SMPTE ST 2110 Professional Media Over Managed IP Networks suite of standards for handling uncompressed video sent over IP networks.

The CG1 supports Fixed Rate Link (FRL), the latest signal technology supported in the latest HDMI specification. FRL is required to receive 12-bit signals, handle higher uncompressed high-resolution data, such as 4K, and take advantage of high-speed bandwidths for compressed video transport over an HDMI connection.

PHONT

PHONT – Emotion-Aware Subtitles for the Next Generation of Storytelling

PHONT transforms subtitles into living, expressive elements that visualize the emotions and dynamics behind sound. By combining advanced speech analytics with AI-driven emotion recognition, PHONT identifies tone, emotion, speaker identity, and sound events to translate them into intuitive, visual subtitles.

The technology bridges accessibility and creativity: for Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences, it provides a richer understanding of emotion and intent. For a new generation of viewers – often watching on mute, across languages, and on mobile – PHONT enhances entertainment itself, turning subtitles into a dynamic storytelling layer that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers.

PHONT integrates seamlessly into existing workflows: PHONT Studio empowers creators to design expressive captions, while PHONT Stage enables broadcasters and streaming platforms to integrate emotion-aware subtitles directly into playback. The result is a data-driven, aesthetic subtitle system that expands how audiences connect with sound and story.

Rooted in research on type design and emotion visualization, PHONT redefines subtitles as a universal visual language—one that speaks both to inclusion and to the evolving ways global audiences experience media.

PixSpan Data (A Division of ALT Systems)

PixMover™ by PixSpan Data (A Division of ALT Systems) is a high-performance data movement and storage optimization platform built for large-scale imaging workflows. It utilizes proprietary real-time lossless image compression technology to move massive data loads—such as DPX, TIFF, and EXR files—efficiently, securely, and reliably.

The platform streamlines four primary workflows:

– Point-to-Point:

Leveraging GPU/CPU algorithms and the PixMover Appliance, the platform achieves transfer rates exceeding 25Gb/s, effectively transmitting data at more than double the line rate of the connection.

– Cloud Transfer:

Efficient data migration provides a massive savings in cloud workflows by cutting the payload in half (e.g., reducing a 10TB transfer to 5TB or less), drastically reducing expensive egress costs.

– Cloud-To-Cloud:

Essential for multi-cloud management, the platform minimizes egress charges from the originating cloud and accelerates transmission to the destination cloud, making large replication projects feasible.

– Storage Optimization:

PixMover allows for in-place compression and the ability to keep data in the optimized PXE format, maximizing storage capacity within data centers and archives.

Move more data faster while paying less for both transfer and storage.

Storj

Production Cloud + “The Storj Production Cloud redefines post-production by merging globally distributed object storage, real-time file access, and on-demand compute into a single, open platform for the media and entertainment (M&E) industry. It reimagines media infrastructure as a unified, cloud-native mesh seemingly purpose-built for distributed workflows. It enables studios, post facilities, and independent creators to collaborate globally with local-like production-ready responsiveness, delivering consistently superior performance at a fraction of the cost, without the complexity, lock-in, or unpredictable billing of traditional hyperscalers. By combining globally consistent performance, high-availability storage, metadata-aware object storage access, and proximity-optimized compute, Storj Production Cloud transforms fragmented workflows into scalable, low-latency pipelines. Teams can ingest, review, transcode, edit, and collaborate on content without operational overhead, which helps accelerate time to create, minimizing egress, and enabling real-time iteration from anywhere. Designed for 24/7 production environments, the platform offers frictionless scalability, intuitive operation, and predictable economics that eliminate complexity while scaling effortlessly with creative demand.”
