In fond memory of Fred Rheinstein

With sadness, the Hollywood Post Alliance has learned of the passing of Fred Rheinstein, one of its founding members, an HPA Lifetime Achievement Award winner and truly one of the pioneers of the Post Production industry. Fred nearly always sported a perfectly self-tied bow tie which distinguished him in a way so very few could have pulled off and not be thought pretentious. While he was a man from a different time and era, he so fit into and defined the future of our industry by invariably helping to introduce new editorial, graphics, visual effects and sound post production techniques that became standard in the post production industry. Through Lirol, Offline Inc, The Post Group and the Production Group, Fred recruited, trained and mentored many who would go on to become some of the “who’s who” of Post Production. His commitment to industry common ground and common purpose led him to leadership roles in many organizations including ITS (the predecessor organization to HPA) and he played a key role in founding the Hollywood Post Alliance. His jovial mannerism and collegiality were the outward manifestations of a determined, smart, take-no-prisoners approach to getting tasks done, building his business or giving of his time so freely to others. Fred epitomized the entrepreneurial spirit that defined the post production industry in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s as we made the transition from film to video to a digital world that Fred and others helped to create. His contributions will long be celebrated and remembered as will his passionate devotion to his family and also to his industry family who will miss him deeply.
