Women in Post Panel at SMPTE MTS

HPA Women in Post is delighted to present a panel at the SMPTE Media Technology Summit: From Emulsion to Pixels: A Color(Full) Conversation About Preserving the Art of Color, Fostering Continuity in Technological Transition, and Embracing Innovation

The evolution of color grading and color science presents a unique challenge in maintaining the integrity of craft across generations while preserving uniqueness and historical context. As contemporary trends increasingly homogenize looks, there is a growing concern that nuanced visual diversity and contextual relevance may diminish over time. This panel discussion will explore strategies to bridge the generational gaps in color grading practice, aiming to safeguard the richness of color grading traditions against the rising tide of uniformity. By examining anecdotal cases and theoretical color science pipelines, this discussion will investigate how education, mentorship, apprenticeship, and interdisciplinary collaboration can foster innovation in color evolution from film to digital and beyond. Emphasizing the importance of preserving historical traditions, this panel hopes to inspire actionable steps for colorists and color scientists to transcend temporal boundaries and ensure future films and television shows retain their visual distinctiveness.

Empowering and supporting the future of the craft of color grading will require the careful integration of color science advancements with time tested aesthetic principles. Now more than ever we must advocate for a balanced approach to the creative process that empowers technological innovation and respects its historic principles  and traditions. This dual focus panel discussion seeks to empower colorists and color scientists young and seasoned to create visual pipelines that meet the functional demands of streaming services and new display technologies while also providing visual palettes that resonate deeply with audiences. The goal is to enrich the color grading legacy for future generations.
