The YEP Program: The Right Choice

By Michelle Diaz, Project Manager, Pixelogic Media

Moving to California was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make, and it’s been the greatest thus far. My journey has allowed me to experience life on set for student films, life in an audio facility for independent films, and now life at Pixelogic Media working on a regular basis with NBCU. People said it would be difficult, but I took a leap of faith. Movies have fascinated me as far back as I can remember; but not once, did I think I would be able to have the career in the entertainment industry that I do now. You see, I’m a first-generation Latina and this was not the plan.

Being a young woman in the industry is intimidating; and being a minority on top of that adds fuel to the fire. So, when YEP was brought to my attention by my supervisor, I jumped at the opportunity. Through YEP I have met so many people from diverse backgrounds, with similar goals and the same drive to succeed in the industry. It’s been refreshing and welcoming. Not only have I made new friends, but the mentorship program has been eye-opening. From the round table discussions to my one on one with my mentor, I’ve gotten more than I ever expected. I’ve been able to ask top execs what their most memorable life lesson has been, needless to say the responses were great! I’ve also gotten advice on how to handle difficult and challenging situations regarding my career, which is something that most people must face alone.

There are moments in life when we all question the choices we’ve made, and then there are moments that reinforce the decisions we’ve made. I am grateful to be part of a company that pushes me to grow in my career and to tend to my relationships within the entertainment industry. I am also grateful for the opportunity to be a part of HPA’s Young Entertainment Professionals because it has opened so many doors. When our first roundtable discussion ended, I knew I was in the right place.
