2020 HPA Awards Watch: The Call for Entries for Engineering Excellence Has Opened!

We’ll be cheering the community in a virtual awards ceremony

The HPA Awards are reaching an important milestone this year, celebrating 15 years of honoring the creative and technical brilliance of our community while gathering to fete, connect, and elevate great work. This year, we’ll be cheering again, and like so many honors in our industry, we will be together virtually.

A core event within the HPA Awards, the Engineering Excellence Award, has opened the call for submission. The HPA Award for Engineering Excellence is truly a coveted honor in the technology community, and recognizes companies that have demonstrated creative ingenuity to develop breakthrough technologies in media, content production, finishing, distribution, and archive. The call for submission runs until July 31. Entries, which again will be peer-judged, can include products or processes. Most importantly, they must represent a significant step forward for industry beneficiaries. Over the years an incredible array of technologies has been chosen for the award, and all of them bring advancement to our work.  2019 recipients of the HPA Engineering Excellence Award were Adobe, Epic Games, Pixelworks, Portrait Displays, Inc. and LG Electronics.

Joachim Zell, Chair of the HPA Engineering Excellence Award Committee and HPA Board member, said, “We encourage you to submit your significant technological achievements. What we see at the HPA Engineering Excellence Award judging sessions are important ideas that will lead the growth of, and stability of, the industry. Critical, game changing products have been presented here. The atmosphere is competitive, collegial and passionate. I expect that this year’s entries will be as compelling as in the past, if not even more so, given our circumstances. I am looking forward to seeing what our industry has to present.”

In consideration of social distancing, the application and presentation process for the engineering honors have been modified for this year. Applicants will engage in a two-step process: submission of written and video elements, followed by a live Q&A with the blue ribbon judges. Zell noted, “Like we always do, we are assembling an esteemed group of judges who are recognized industry experts. And even though the process will not be in person this year, we have devised a plan to keep the interaction with judges, and the non-commercial, interactive nature of the submission process, in place.”

HPA is respectful of the challenges facing the industry, and have put a number of important changes into place for the 2020 HPA Awards, toward a goal of making it possible for as many constituents as possible to participate as well as supporting HPA’s mission to honor the community of individuals and companies that serve the industry in indispensable ways. Those changes will include 2020-only modifications to creative categories, an extended entry period, and reduced entry fees.

This year’s online HPA Awards gala will be open to all who are interested to attend, at no cost. The HPA Awards take place with the

Creative Categories will be opening soon.
